BMW Neue Klasse: A Different Design Language

First, it must be noted that the reintroduction of BMW Neue Klasse is not meant as a simple refresh or even an update, but a replacement of the OEM’s current design language. For example, the oversized kidney grilles are now a thing of the past. On sedans like the soon-to-be-debuted BMW i3 Neue Klasse, the grille has been replaced by a wider, lower, horizontally oriented version that retains the kidney shape while looking distinctly modernized thanks to tasteful lighting elements. Headlights have been similarly reconfigured, and now consist of angular, vertical LED lights instead of the rounded style of lighting that Canton enthusiasts are accustomed to. The iX3 SUV has received similar treatment, with a less prominent kidney grille, LED backlighting, and other angular lighting elements in the front.

Currently used body style elements are also on the chopping block with the modern-day advent of the BMW Neue Klasse. The elaborate hood folds, shoulder creases, and door swells that currently define BMW styling are largely gone, replaced by a cleaner, more sculpted design that hearkens back to the “less is more” philosophy of the original Neue Klasse. Simply put, BMW Neue Klasse aims to achieve a clean, composed, and timeless look by removing unnecessary “visual noise” and retaining the essence of what makes a BMW, a BMW.
